COGNITIVE OPERATIONS IN THE PROCESS OF L2 COGNATES AND FALSE COGNATES RECOGNITION

Cognates, false cognates and partial cognates are defined in this paper. It also describes the ways of the phenomenon application in many NLP tasks involving bilingual lexical knowledge, such as acquisition of bilingual lexicons from comparable corpora and statistical machine translation, second language acquisition, translation studies, etc. The paper focuses on the pedagogical implementation of the research of cognates and cognitive operations in the process of cognates' recognition while studying a foreign language. We predict that full cognates can facilitate the process of L2 word recognition and thus, the process of L2 acquisition however full and partial cognates can slow down the process.
